We have now been in the house a year. We have been going down our to-do list of house projects. having Tim as my handy hubby help knock out these lists quickly. This project was fueled by having my car sitting in the shop. Tim picked me up and we went looking for tiles and ending with a new bathroom. Good-bye 80s builder blue- its a thing just google! Hello fresh, simple farmhouse with shiplap.

The tile in shower had been redone in subway, so we kept that changing everything else. The boys began demolition, Jack loves this part. My job was to clean and shop- the best job!

Vanity & Counter- We bought both pieces at Lowe's. Vanity in white and counter in grey. Our floor tiles are black and white floral from Home Depot. We looked at several and though considered black, they are grey when you look at them next to a true black and on floor stand out just how we wanted.

Mirror was found at HomeGoods store. Went with white over grey to stand out on the walls we did paint grey. Tim did half the walls with shiplap on back wall and side. We left the vanity/toilet side solid grey, we are still looking for the perfect shelves or cabinet to go on the walls.

Thankful once again Tim is so handy and quick. A great update to our main floor bathroom.
Season 22 is about to start for Thomas and Friends with a whole new look and mission. Thomas and Friends has collaborated with the United Nations to incorporate their Sustainable Development Goals- ALL ABOARD FOR GLOBAL GOALS.

"Thomas' unique focus on empathy, collaboration and friendship is more relevant than ever and such an effective way to introduce children to the most important goal values of their lifetime - as embodied by the Sustainable Development Goal, " said Richard Dickson, President and COO of Mattel.

What are Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

They are goals adopted in 2015 by all the Member States that form the United Nation. There are 17 goals and the collaboration between the UN and Thomas & Friends cover FIVE of those goals on Season 22 with 26 new TV episodes and a movie. Most importantly the gender-balanced Steam Team -there are now 3 female and 3 male lead trains plus Thomas. Emily, Nia and Rebecca join Percy, James and Gordon in Tidmouth Sheds on the Isle of Sodor.

In the new seasons as well as the micro episodes online, (view them on allaboardforglobalgoals.com) Thomas and his friends will explore the Sustainable Development Goals #4 Quality Education, #5 Gender Equality, #11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, #12 Responsible Consumption and Production, and #15 Life on Land. Parents can also find on the website some parent tips, activity sheets as well as PSA form Thomas to the kids. This is a full interactive, "educational" website for families. Thomas and The UN have made this partnership possible by bringing "big words and topics" down to preschool levels. Thomas is a worldwide known character, this reaches kids of all countries and ages, hoping kids absorb these facts through stories/TV.

How do kids become "global citizens"?

They become thinkers to start, the youngest learn by watching and listening. Those watching the Thomas and Friends show which are covering the SDGs, will ask their parents questions from the show, I mean have you ever watched a show with your child, they ask a thousand questions. These questions about the goals will open conversation between children and adults. Role playing and acting as a role model for the future, involving kids in the dream of peace. They are finding new ways to explain big topics.

I am so happy about this collaboration as a "Thomas Parent". The educational value in this show has only increased, teaching both boy and girls important messages that will only continue to grow in importance and be a factor in their lives.

I have been having fun decorating our house. Who doesn't love decorating a new to them house? Creating their home. Tim and I have a list of projects planned big and small. While we wait to do that and paint, I am getting around to hanging things. I started with a gallery wall going up the stairs to the kids floor in the house.

This was a year in the making, I started collecting items to hang before we even moved in. I just collected adding to a box each time I bought something new or unpacked something I wanted included. Then using butcher paper, I traced (not exactly but close) each item so I could work on placement on the wall. I lived with these papers for a few days giving it the feel, look and rearrangement possibilities.

NAIL DAY! Then I started hanging, a few pieces were removed completely, new added and I still wanted to add some more. So another week went by.

Most items are from Hobby Lobby, Michael's, Target, JoAnne's and other stores.
Those moms who feel they are just doing it on a cycle. You are not alone.

I sit here at11:37pm finally free, to do me, I mean I was "free" before that BUT there was laundry, dishes, picking up toys, garbage round up that I just couldn't ignore first. No one sees what I see. I do all day for the kids when I am not teaching, working my own small business and helping the husband. I may sleep 6-7 hours a night. I FEEL BURNT OUT!

Those awake hours, I hear "he is touching me", "looking at me", "kicking me", "touching me" and REPEAT over and over.

Those awake hours, I am pushing through until bedtime. It may look like I have it together, it MAY but I don't feel I do most days!

Those awake hours, I am running around for everyone, getting everything done they didn't know needed to get done.

Those awake hours, I know where every lost shoe/sock/sandal is. If only they just put it away when I asked the first 10 times.

Those awake hours, I drive to activities, sports, meals and playdates. Drowning out their arguments with music, louder and louder.

Those awake hours, I am collecting laundry through the house, washing it, drying it and all I ask is for everyone to put away. I wash, dry and sort repeat daily. Life is a cycle.

Those awake hours, I just want to hear the word THANKS. Thanks for.... From someone in my household.

Those awake hours, I fight for my family. I fight for what they deserve, their treatment, what they need. Who fights for me?

Those awake hours, I am surviving on caffeine. Had you seen my Starbucks bill lately?

So much is just expected. So much is taken for granted. So much is just done because we know if we don't do it, it will never get done. I want you to know you are not alone. I appreciate what you do. I see what you do. I know that without you, it won't get done. Moms I get you, thank you, love you and hear you.

Good Job! From a fellow burnt out mom.

One day I will be a Mother-in-Law (hopefully times two) and I hope to remember these tips after chatting with my mom friends over the years.

1. ASK! You am no longer the one in charge, your child has a family of their own. Remember to ASK not tell, demand or just do.

2. You am not the MOM to their kids, you are the grandparent. Your job is not to do what you want, but be helpful, listen to your children on how they want to raise their kids, you had your turn.

3. Gifts don't buy affection, time and memories are most important.

4. Listen, don't assume.

5. Respect the balance of family and other set of grandparents/side. Sharing events.

6. Holiday traditions, their own family wants to start traditions, they are blending theirs to make their own.

7. If given a wish list, use it. We clean the playroom.

8. Ask how you can help. Don't think what you are doing is helping with the kids, house or their life.

As we have now been in this house 6 months, I have continued to decorate, arrange and fill out space. My office has been a work in progress, and I am still perfecting it to have everything I want and need but not more.
Running a home business and as an independent teacher for an agency, I have to be able to have my schedule accessible and know what is going on and when. I also wanted and more likely needed a space of my own. My kid free, husband free zone. Where I can hide, write, watch TV, craft, basically whatever I want. Did I mention using it to hide?
When we moved in, I had 3 desks inside, all sorts of furniture, left and collected I piled in. As I started to organize and get rid of things I was able to minimize. I went down to 2 desks. One for computers and one as a work space. I knew I wanted book cases but wasn't sure the size or style. I had many extras and through back to cube organization units, this was I had book cases but also bins to store the smaller items, toys for review, craft supplies and more. After trying a few layouts, I settled on framing the window. Optimizing floor space and wall space.
Tonight as Tim left the house he said "Look we made it!" half jokingly. Commenting on the now three dogs passed out sleeping on the couch and floor, fire place roaring and the kids in bed. Except instead of joining me in sitting down, he was walking out the door to drive and help someone with frozen pipes and onto a second place with heat/water issues. This is also the 4th night in a row he hasn't been home. It is not easy, this past week even when he has "been home" he was off plowing, running out with the kids before running back to the firehouse for a shift.
We are 3 months into our new home. We have finished the basement, worked on garage, and painted the kids rooms. We have plans for bathrooms and kitchen remodels. Since we moved in and between the rain, cold and then snow, we only did tree work. Landscaping and outdoor play is coming this spring and I cannot wait to fully make this house a home inside and out.

The new school has been great. The drastic change and improvement with Jack in such a short time reinforces the fact we made a good choice. While is mouth and some of the back talking at 7.5, I could do without. Charlotte adjusted well and has a long list of friends to invite over. We are also about to begin planning her half birthday party with her new friends.
Apple Moms had a great year with events and new additions in 2017 and I plan on continuing for 2018. The Trunk or Treat and NYE Balloon Drop had record numbers. We have story times, new posts and other family fun adventures and reviews taking place. W have an Egg Hunt coming this weekend and more plans to come.

Family has been well interesting. My parents have been a constant, again I don't know what we would do without them. Actions Speak Louder Than Words is the expression I will use for the rest.
One of things I wanted most in our new house was a Command Center, I thrive off organization (and organized chaos). A gallery wall of where everything is. So when we moved in and I saw the blank space off the back door and laundry area I had plans. Lots of plans, we don't have a mud room, so this is the next best thing. Functionality, look and size.

How to plan:

I started collecting pieces I liked that I previously had and then went shopping to Marshalls, Target and Michael's Stores. Get a large box or paper to sprawl out and plan where you are placing each item so it flows. I suggest picking a focal point or starting piece on a side and making that the top/bottom and going off that. I did add a family quote print in a frame, the letter P and I am looking for one more accent piece to add to it. I also painted the cabinets opposite the wall above the laundry machines two different grey chalk paints and then added a grey carpet runner to also keep with the color scheme and them.
We have affiliate links inside this recap.

Watch out Chip and Joanna, the Proctor team is coming one room at a time. When we were house hunting a basement was a must, it didn't need to be finished we just needed one. The house we bought had a huge one, broken into two parts. We had a plan and it was the first thing we started when we moved in. Unfortunately, we came across a major water problem, that put a halt on the work inside and we moved outside. We put in curtain drains and we resealed two of the outside walls the front right and right side when looking at the house. This was also done between Tim working his job and running his business. Full plate without a doubt.
A playroom is born. I have always envisioned a playroom for the kids t have all their toys. A TV for the video games and this room being about to grow with them; from kids to tween to teen hang out. We were able to start from scratch and add our own touches. Outlets are everywhere, we even added them to the support beams we then built out. Recessed lighting was another must for us, so they can fade or be off for movie nights plus two sections, TV and toy side. Even the playhouse has a light.

Updates- We finally closed on September 5th. Way past the contract date. Basically no one wanted to take the blame for what happened but I am so happy to be done with the Carmel house. I have a list of people who we will never use again when buying/selling a home. Yes we have so many happy memories in the house, but we outgrew it almost immediately after moving in. The neighborhood left a lot to desired and the taxes.

I learned a lot since listing in March about house selling and buying. The local markets and tax rates/maps. I would say I am a bit obsessed with looking up tax rolls, maps and percentages. All so important that people don't think about. Yes- you are told the taxes, but you have to find out if they are at tax cap, the school taxes and more. I found very handy sites to look this all up. Eparcels works for every county in the Hudson Valley (and probably more but I only checked Dutchess, Westchester and Putnam while we were looking. his helped with property lines, tax history and sale history, way better than zillow.

On November 1st we closed on our new home. Super excited and Tim has gone full blown contractor for just about everything in the house. We did get the keys on the 27th, so we had a few days before hand. He started with garage so then he could get his tools over to this house. Then we started with basement, which resulted in flooding with the storm we had. So while that is on a standstill we moved to the kids room, which now have polished hardwood and painted rooms. They are set!

Thinking of buying? Check out my tips-

Google the address and check pages 5,6,7 of them to get past the listings and see if anything happened at the house. One house we saw and loved had a pedophile who had lived there. Pictures of him in the house were used on a TV episode, bad vibes. Another house had a murder happen in it (this was a rental we had looked at in June). Crazy right?!

Drive around day time and night, check out the neighborhood, road, traffic.

Schools- Join the local Facebook group for town/school and see what parents are saying.

Use people your friends have used not just those recommended by the realtor. Our inspection guy was a friend recommendation, he was great and we used him twice (the first house needed too much work we walked away). We used lawyer that came recommended by friends. The lawyer we used to sell, was awful. If I am paying you I shouldn't have to do your job. Also ask on FB, you will get the good, bad and ugly for sure.

Get ready to watch the process as we make this house our home. Who needs HGTV when you have Putnam Handyman and Karen... just kidding, kinda!

6 Years ago you came into our lives, completing our family of four. Jack received a sister, you two continue to be the best of friends and the ones who annoy each other the most. This will continue well past your high school years. You are a tough girl. Many say they want to be like you, you are their spirit animal. You are a boss, and that I hope sticks with you the rest of your life. You are self directed, get things done but still know when to ask for help. You look up to others and also help those younger. You are determined and talented, you practice. You have already learned practice makes perfect and you are so excited for 1st grade with your friends.
Our our recent family trip to Universal Studios we partook in two workshops with The Leader in Me during the Family Forward. The Leader in Me is a whole-school based model to empower children. We did The Leader in Me at Home activities which helped us rethink what we do at home with Jack and Charlotte. They also suggested Mission Statements for the family. After the the trip we discussed and formed one together based on our principals with the help of their prompts. Want to learn about making your own? Have you asked your family what is their purpose? It is not a typical question, first there were a bunch of funny answers, but those funny answers were the real answer for our purpose. We honestly hadn't thought of our purpose or a mission statement until partaking in the activities during Family Forward. FAMILY FIRST was the main idea that kept coming up from the kids and adults. This involved sharing out feelings on success and happiness.

Most importantly was the purpose, RESPECT. To do that we have to have a bond, stand up for each other, love and help our family. In our home we want to be loving, caring and happy. If we are those things, everyone will be happy fulfilling our relationships and priorities with one another. We went over these questions using the Leadership at Home questions on their website for guidance on Our Family Mission Statement. More importantly with our mission, how will we contribute to society as a family. Our family has always been service-oriented. Dad is a first responder, mom plans community events and works with special education children and the kids donate and recycle toys, clothes and more.
As a parent, I want caring kids who strive for themselves first and the family. Starting with making leaders, and "the roots" of The 7 Habits Tree. The Win-Win (playing well with others) is the trunk of the tree before taking care of yourself and BALANCE. Modeling as parents for the children is key. Making better kids, students and humans.

This post is LOOONG overdue. I started writing it in June. I am going to edit with where we are now the second to last week in August, basically 2.5 months LATER!

June 1st here and I about to dive head first into packing up the house. We are in contracts currently with our house and should be closing beginning of July. That date came and went. I am super excited but as of right now we have no where to go. We found a rental that is amazing after going to see 4, one ended up having a murder there too. Our luck. Moving is stressful and throwing kids into the mix adds to that stress. I just keep thinking about the new beginning is it going to bring. Everyone in the house will be included in the process too. Jack and Charlotte have given us their requests and they are quite funny. For the most part when we have gone to homes they have stayed in the car or outside on the phones with no interest coming inside.

My happiness currently includes the fact that I am getting to throw out, sell or donate much of the house. I am limiting what we move with us. We did the first purge last summer, and everything we have is very organized and labeled, but I don't want to take extras.

UPDATE 8/21/17:

We still have NOT closed on our house. I am lost at who is to blame, but overall some major details were left out of the offer/contract and the buyers have not closed on their place so they have not closed on our place. We have been very annoyed. We issued a Time of the Essence letter, and suddenly things moved along and the people rented. I won't name name until we have closed but buyers lawyer is not one I would recommend or deal with again on a sale.

We found an amazing furnished rental on Candlewood Lake with a beach, dock for the boat and views. I will miss waking up to the lake when we move out. So I am taking it all in until then. The kids love having friends over, going fishing and taking friends out on the boat.

While sad to be out of our first family home, after all the drama in selling it and stress of this sale, we rushed out the final weekend before leaving on vacation and basically shut the garage and just left. No final picture of the four of us but we're out. Hopefully sometime next week we actually officially close and I can stop paying for the house. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2268400085452972882.post-54033206173940252792017-04-22T10:44:00.000-04:002017-04-22T10:44:40.063-04:00Children's Activities the Expense of It All

As moms we want it all for our kids. We want to sign them up in activities to keep them busy, keep them social and well because everyone else is doing it. I started with library and a moms group when my first was only weeks old. It continued from there. Swim lessons, town soccer, balance bike racing, dance classes, the list goes on. The price of it all can add up to a mortgage payment itself. How do we do it, why do we do it? Asked today, my answer was, we just do. I go without, my husband goes without, all for the kids to go with.

I find when we are busy, they sleep better, behave better- once in activity. We are better honestly, I have always been an on the go person, always out. Transitioning to said activity- they never want to start, leave house to do for "fear of missing out" on a show or game, move off couch at times. Though I am heard all kid do this.

Currently they have private hockey lessons, separate coaches, karate twice a week for Jack, Art/Drawing class for Charlotte, and LEGO Club after school for both, which I run. BMX is about to start in May for both. Now the expensive comes in, equipment, monthly charges, per session charges. Honestly I have never thought about it. We have decided or the kids asked to join a club or sport, and we signed them up and paid. Maybe it meant no date night, that month, limited extras, trips to Target or the mall. We just did it. My thought it as home they are going to just choose video-games, TV, iPad or sit around so if they are enrolled in something they are out, busy, occupied beyond the screen.

I know eventually the kids will choose less. They will pick a seasonal sport, or just one altogether. They are young, so we will take it as it comes. I will continue to do without so my kids can do with. So if I have to write another article, and another job has to be worked. I can only hope when they are old enough they remember all they did and they do it for their kids too.

How do you manage it all with your kids?

Our Pressed Penny Collection

What do you buy on vacation for souvenirs? We do pressed pennies. We travel a lot and with two kids that can get expensive and honestly how many stuffed animals do I need? About 3 years ago we started with pennies. We became members of the Bronx Zoo and every time we went the kids wanted something. I had noticed the pressed penny machines everywhere, since we would be coming a lot I figured this would the best bet to keep the kids happy, not break the bank and have a cool collection of something.

Bronx Zoo and Disney

And so it began. A penny collection.

We then went to Disney World in 2013, the kids wanted everything! What is a thing to collect while there without spending a lot? Pennies (which technically cost $0.51)!! We stuck mostly to pennies but sometimes did quarters while in in Disney. National Zoo in DC was another great penny collecting location. I also use it as a teachable moment, talking about the animal or image on the penny and asking the kids questions about facts too.

Some of our Pennybooks

Everywhere we go now the kids take turns cranking the machine and taking ownership of half the family collection. Typically most gift shops have books for the pennies, the "big purchase" we make. We will date the pennies sometimes to remember when we visited, especially if its a frequented location so we take our time collecting. Recently in Universal Studios Orlando, we also added to our collection with a new book. Smaller attractions and even rest-stops on road trips have pennies.

You can go to this website: PennyCollector.com They list all the pennies in locations, we used to this to double check our completed NYC Zoo/Aquarium collection.

Tips:

Use an old M&M tube to hold your quarters and pennies (I organize them 2 quarters/1 penny in stacks)

Go on PennyCollector.com and get list of all pennies in that location (great for larger parks like Disney, Zoos, Attractions)

Find penny holding book at gift shop or order generic one from AMAZON

Save SHINY/NEW pennies for the pressing, they come out and look better

While I attend events often, few are geared just to the kids, which makes KidzVuz events special. The kids love these because they are able to ask their own questions, touch and try new products and be themselves. We were happy to be invited as media to share our opinions.

Come up with ideas and see what is on trend, luckily living in the NYC area, the blogger world is huge and networking events with major companies is readily available. For the third year in a row I attended the MomTrends Holiday party, run my Nicole Feliciano, author of MOMBOSS.

I love these events, a few ours to spend chatting about what is coming up on friends websites, meeting brands and discussing what we love the best. This year the MomTrends Team had over ten brands showcased.

Pyret Winter Clothes PreviewThe ProcFam are outside people. Cold weather people. Between playing in the snow, snowboarding, and hunting we are outside. So when I was invited to check out Polarn O. Pyret, or PO.P. (Buddy and the Little Guy is the Swedish translation) as it can be referred to here in the states, I was immediately interested. Thank you Brianne, from Stroller in the City for the invite.

Polarn O. Pyret formed in Sweden in 1976 and is the leading children's brand there, coming to the US in 2009. Currently there are two stores in NYC, I visited the one in Tribeca meeting Jennifer Athanasan, President of PO.P. She gave us a rundown of all the cold weather gear kids need to stay warm and be kids.

I loved how she stressed the importance of kids being outside and "being kids", which I love and how I am with my kids. Go outside! For cold weather, layering is huge. 3-in-1 coats, waterproof overall liners, and 1 piece fleece sets. Polarn O. Pyret offers more outerwear choices then other lines. Their bright colors and patterns are great for all ages and they have you covered from babies-12 years old.
We love building, imagining and creating. We have fairy gardens outside, doors on the inside and now a fort in their bedroom. We sure do love fairies, which is why we love Dreamland Fairy.

We chose the Dreamland Tooth Fairy Fort, as the kids are starting to loose their teeth. Actually the day Jack lost a tooth, he painted and decorated it, we read the story and placed the tooth in the chest that the fort comes with. The Story explained to us that it can be hard for fairies to find teeth under lumpy pillows and having it in a chest is easier for them to find the teeth. The fairies leave a treat in the chest, money for him. We liked the fort so much, he lost two teeth, two days apart.

From a parent perspective this was easy for me, since I don't have to worry about possibly waking him up. The chest is small, a perfect size for dollars or a treat. Their own creativity is on display with how they decorate, and between teeth it sits on their dresser.

In the story that comes in the book, the fairies like to fly to their assigned kids and listen to their dreams to gather stories to return to Dreamland and share. Besides the Dreamland Tooth Fairy Fort, there is also the Fairy Kit, a house with a small secret door that is left open when the fairy has stopped by to listen to dreams. Ready moms, for us its a routine when turning off the night light while they are sleeping. Also it doesn't happen each night, so its a surprise when its opened (when you remember).

The kits come unpainted and ready to go with paint and accessories. How to paint is up to your child's imagination. Great rainy day activity, present for a friend or gift when your child gets their first loose tooth.
The Annual Toy Insider's Holiday of Play event took place this month. As a parent I want to know what is the best for the kids this holiday season, makes shopping easier and I know what toys we are investing in also. I want toys that will last longer than a week with the kids interest.
Over the past 7 months, Jack has become obsessed with video games. Especially the original Nintendo and Atari games, he calls Mario his original name Jumpman from Donkey Kong games. He has become an expert at old video games, when they were made, the background and how to play. He takes in everything, wanting to learn more.
What I love more is conversations about these games. He talks, we all know its hard to get our kids talking, especially young ones. I won't forget him telling me about his "new game" Tetris! He is explaining it to me as if it is magic, these shapes coming down and I turn them to match and then disappear. I let him continue since he was so enthusiastic about it until I told him how it was my first game except it was in green/grey for me back in 1992. He then told me I was old.
In early July, we visited the Museum of Moving Image to check out their Arcade Classic exhibit, open until September 18th. Currently featuring over 30 classic games including q*Bert, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Ms. Pac-Man, Pong and more. This again all stemmed from the movie Pixels he watched back in March. His obsession quickly it grew.
MOM TIP:

Get protection for everything! The screens, the console, and the games. I shopped at GameStop and Amazon for supplies. I just do not trust my kids breaking everything.

Organization Bag: I keep everything together in one location. He has a bag that keeps everything 2DS and 3DS together, he travels with it, so everything is always in same place and can't be lost easily.

Family time/bonding. Jack and Charlotte are playing games together more and more. Whether it be on the same team or against each other. I have been playing with Jack and Tim loves to play with the kids. Did I mention how the kids kicked me down stairs with my office and TV down there?

Jack has also been saving up his money and earning more by doing chores and extra favors and work around the house. He wants quarters for video games when we are out and also to buy his own games. Luckily Grandma works next door to Game Stop and he gets to look their, make a plan for what he wants and then work towards his goal.

Now we will just grow with Nintendo, systems and games. Shhh! Don't tell the kids technically I can set the WiiU up in the car or the Atari system. Saving that for a long road trip surprise.
I started as a Military Wife, when I married a Sailor. I then became a First Responder Wife, when he became a fireman. I am a first responders wife.

I came home to finish college while he finished his time in the military and was deployed. I did not want to be a military mom away from my family, neither did he (military dad). What he wanted to be was a fireman in NYC. So he left the military and became a fireman. This lead to a whole new schedule and routine, and truthfully there are days I feel the military would have been easier. The schedule and routine would have been more manageable.
If you are a first responder wife, I am sure you will understand. Share the same frustrations, complaints and joys.

Pre-Kids:
After being in a long distance marriage for over a year, I was very independent and had my routines. School, work, weekends even with pets, I managed it all. Had fun with friends and family and traveling to see my love when he was in the states on weekends. Once in the fire department, I had him back with me and a new routine to get used to. I was still able to sleep in when I could and I had two to three nights a week alone still. Those nights, I caught up on my TV shows, worked late, met friends or just relaxed. During the days I commuted to work, taught, attended meetings and drove home. Holidays were done with respected families, and missing them for work wasn't a big deal. I even said work so the guys with kids could be home for Christmas, Halloween and others. We made everything work and our time off together really "off".

Change came, KIDS:
Suddenly juggling a baby, work and my husbands schedule that changed daily/weekly/monthly made life difficult. This Mom runs the house, we have missed several holidays and firsts together, many nights of tears before bed and questions, lots of questions. Sick days are hard, a lot falls on me, bandaids, car rides, birthday parties, school obligations and more. Kids also brought JOY to our house. Their daddy is their HERO. They look up to him like a superhero. They talk about him like a superhero, and they visit him as if its Marvel headquarters. Always wanting to bring their friends to see him.

Once they saw him in action, for the first time my heart ached "make sure my daddy comes home safe" my 4 year old told the EMT standing nearby. They understand the unmentional. This is another possibility, one we don't speak of by always think about. The kids play us, when its mom only night, they go to bed, sleep, and its early. If we are both home? We need one more kiss, one more hug, bathroom break and sip of water. They have our fireman wrapped around their tiny fingers. They are good! Days off don't exist. There may be no work, but the kids are up. they need meals at a normal time.

Empty Nest Dreams/Goals:
Retirement? Does anyone retire in 20 years? Can we even afford it at 40 years old when kids would be just in their teens and starting high school? Do more years at work? Wait until college, after college? Then travel, I mean our goals were always to travel, or move to Utah or Montana. Our dreams, after the stress. I don't know what I would do sleeping next to someone 7 nights a week. How do people do it? Retirement will be a huge adjustment, for now its a dream.

As a first responder wife, I do have fears- Will he come home, get hurt, and what if something horrible happens? But if I dwell, I wouldn't be able to leave the house or deal. So I spend time thinking about the good stuff, I think about the future, and I think about everything being okay. That's the sacrifice we make for our spouses.
I love Back to School, as a teacher and especially now as a parent because the kids are back to school. KidzVuz 3rd Annual Back to School event brought together top brands with kids in July. Jack, Charlotte and I headed down to meet with the thirteen sponsors. These events hold great exposure to brands but also so kid friendly, many times the brands/companies talking directly to the children.
